USA delivers super missiles to Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Selenskyj demonstrated great unity on Thursday — and concealed a great disappointment for Ukraine.
Because in the new aid package for Ukraine were — so far it was known — no ATACMS missiles included, for which Ukraine had urgently asked.
Biden had promised Selenskyj during his visit in Washington that the USA will deliver a small number of ATACMS. This is reported by the U.S. broadcaster NBC News and the “Washington Post” with reference to U.S. officials.
Following Selenskyj’s visit, the U.S. Department of Defense had listed the military items it was supplying to Ukraine as part of a new $325 million aid package. ATACMS missiles were not included. Ukraine has long requested longer-range weapons systems such as the ATACMS short-range missiles from the United States and the Taurus cruise missiles from Germany.
Why the Ukrainians need these missiles
The ATACMS missiles are short-range ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers that can reach their target within five minutes. They are designed to make Russian troop movements impossible.
