Trump and His MAGA Extremists Are Indeed a Threat to Democracy
Biden came right out and said it out loud. It was strangely cathartic to hear a blunt and direct statement about the 91-times indicted former occupant of the White House. It’s nothing we didn’t already know. Trump is a whirlwind of indignant rage with the impulse control of a toddler. No sane individual wants a world where he gets his hands on the nuclear football for a second time, especially not after he’s been humiliated on the world stage.
People like him tend to react with reckless fury when they get called out. And with the Republican party backing him with outrageously authoritarian manifestos like Project 25, giving him the chance to lash out could have disastrous consequences.
We didn’t take Trump seriously when he first ran for President. I was working the opening shift on the day of that election, back in the bygone era of 2016. I remember my regular first-thing-in-the-morning customer calling, “Hope she wins!” as he backed out of the door with his coffee and his sandwich, not even taking the cell phone away from his ear. I couldn’t have agreed more. We’re Canadian, and it wasn’t our election to vote in… but everyone knew what it would mean to have Donald Trump sitting in the Oval Office. We were terrified and appalled when the results came in.
