Traditional Masculinity

Traditional Masculinity Makes You Sick.

Men know they are miserable. I know a few who love to complain about it. But they like to blame it on everyone but themselves.Dr. Möller-Leimkühler from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich states traditional masculinity as a deciding risk factor for men’s maladaptive coping strategies. Overall, premature death due to suicide, coronary heart disease, violence, accidents and substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) is significantly higher for men than for women. (Möller-Leimkühler, 2002) If you look at a statistic on Statista listing suicide rates of each gender in over 40 countries from 2016 to 2020, you will see that in every single one of those countries, men beat women when it comes to the amount of suicides by far. Iceland has the smallest gap, with men being 1.95 times as likely as women to die by suicide. Poland has the biggest gap, with men being about 7.3 times as likely to die by suicide as women.Hawton (1998) showed that, at the time, suicide was the leading cause of death in 15- to 24-year-old males in several European countries.Socially constructed gender roles come with different social norms and expectations, and may function as a sort of script for individuals, at least partly forming the process of self-definition, self-evaluation, and self-regulation.Although gender-roles have undergone some change over time, they remain influential. Gender is a considerable determinant of health due to gender-specific exposure to stress of life, vulnerability to stress and response to diseases.
