This Army of Poor Farmers Stopped a Powerful Empire in WW1

Once upon a time, an army of barefoot peasants won a battle against a mighty European force. The impossible Battle of Kolubara took place during World War I (1914–1918) between the Serbian troops and the Austro-Hungarian empire. Before the battle, the small Kingdom of Serbia (Southeastern Europe) was on the verge of a disaster, attacked by the ruthless forces of this dual monarchy for months. Mobilized farmers didn’t have enough ammunition, shoes, clothes, and even food to resist the blows of the more powerful enemy.

The European media were reporting that Serbia had already lost the war. The officials in Vienna believed it was a matter of days before Belgrade, the enemy’s capital, would fall into ruins. Oh, the sweet smell of victory! No one thought that soldiers on the verge of exhaustion could crush a military Goliath. Earlier on, the Serbs had suffered too many casualties. Even the commander of the Serbian First Army Petar Bojović got wounded in the leg two days before the battle.
