The Theology of the Body Time Bomb Hits Dennis Prager and His Rational Porn Defense

The Theology of the Body timebomb hit Dennis Prager when he shrugged off pornography and masturbation as “better than adultery.” “Men want variety,” Prager, the author of The Rational Bible series, argued. “If pornography is a substitute for one’s wife, it’s awful. If it’s a substitute for adultery, it is not awful.” Prager, a conservative commentator who spent 40 years teaching the Bible and hosting national conversations on religion, won over most conservatives (including traditional Christians) — until his recent Exodus series with psychology professor Jordan Peterson set off that Theology of the Body. Traditional Catholics (quoting St. John Paul the Great) and conservatism (defending a nearly century-old evolution of increasing sexual libertarianism) seemed very opposed. Video traffic exploded with all sides talking about things everyone cares about (issues that are also rarely debated in Christian and conservative forums), including the meaning of:“The human body includes right from the beginning…the capacity of expressing love, that love in which the person becomes a gift — and by means of this gift — fulfills the meaning of his being and existence.” — St. John Paul the Great, Theology of the Body talk, January 16, 1980.
