THE GENOCIDE OF PALESTANIANS

A CRUEL THOUGHT ON THE GENOCIDE OF PALESTANIANS

This morning, my first thought was to pray that some nation had gotten Israel to stop trying to eliminate every Palestinian in Gaza once and for all. Before checking the news, I wanted to start with hope. I then began looking through as many news feeds as possible without entering keyword searches. The first thing that popped up was an Israel Reservist telling soldiers to “kill them all, the women, the children.” His pep talk was essentially saying, let’s exterminate them all. Soon after, I came across an Instagram post stating that African nations are divided by whom to support. Some countries have rallied behind the Palestinians because they see their past plight is similar to the Palestinians. And other nations are supporting Israel because their interests are intertwined with Israel or its allies, particularly the U.S. As tears rolled down my eyes and my mind raced, a small thought crept to the forefront.

The majority of the world is now and has been behaving like middle schoolers. Many nations policies and practices, and even sometimes the citizens themselves, are simply locked into the politics of a middle school. Pre-teens are extremely self-interested while also in desperate need of belonging. The authorities: parents, teachers, and school rules, become less important to them, so long as, they have their peers or some sense of importance. As a former teacher, I preferred high school or elementary school over middle. Why? Because middle schoolers are the hardest to reason with or simply to “control”. Middle school is a place filled with cliques, confusion, attitudes, insecurity and irrational decision making. It is hard for the child to navigate and just as hard for the adults trying to usher them through it.
