The Bizarrely Unique Tale of Jujutsu Kaisen
Initially, I thought that Jujutsu Kaisen would be a stereotypical supernatural cliché storm, just like some of the Japanese manga and anime I’ve encountered. That was way before I touched it. It was fall 2020, and I’ve endured the hype from exactly everyone, especially the otaku community in both the West and the East on social media. At that time, Jujutsu Kaisen was released and streamed on Crunchyroll and HBO Max. But that was not really the reason why it was gathering much of the hype, in spite of it being just a one-season anime series which was adapted from a slight cult hit Japanese manga (the same thing occurred for Attack on Titan back in 2013). And in order for a one-season anime series to obtain its hype as much as I’ve remembered being part of the manga/anime community since I was in my mid-teens, it has to be that phenomenally good and unique to obtain such attention from the general viewers and fans alike. Even My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto and Bleach took time to gather strong viewership and attention as Jujutsu Kaisen.Plus, it was not just the anime/manga otakus who were buzzing about it online, while creating short TikTok reels and parodies, fan art and even memes, which were mostly related to its premise. Even celebrities alike: including rapper Megan Thee Stallion and actor Sebastian Stan had been jumping ship into the obsession of Jujutsu Kaisen. And because of that, I was convinced to look into the hype for a little while right before it was released on Netflix Asia. Other than a very likeable and charismatic female lead character that had carried part of the show (which is Nobara Kugisaki, the hot-headed light auburn-haired heroine, who is reminiscent of both Asuka Langley Sohryu and Ichigo Kurosaki, and was one of the secondary deuteragonists) and a charming, white hair mentor figure-which we have frequently seen it in many anime series prior, other characters however did not personally stand out, in my own opinion.
