Surgeon Cristina Yang stands in an operating room with a gun pointed at her head. She’s the wife of the man on the table. “If you want to hurt them the way that you hurt, shoot me.” When “Grey’s Anatomy” first aired in 2005 I’d started my first professional job and felt I had made it as an adult because I was able to afford basic cable. After a long day in the office, I was glued to “American Idol” and obsessed with “Sex & The City” re-runs. I was hooked on the inner lives of NYC single ladies and the singing talent of cocktail waitresses. My teenage daughter got me hooked on “Grey’s Anatomy” in June. Like most 30-year cycles in popular culture trends, the 90s and early aughts trends are back. Along with mom jeans with wide legs, chokers, necklaces, and platform Converse sneakers, Grey’s is presently part of the fabric of adolescent trends.Before I started watching the medical drama documenting the life of surgeon Meredith Grey, I was already deep into Shondaland. I’ve binged both seasons of “Bridgerton”, as well as “Queen Charlotte”, was thrilled by three seasons of “How to Get Away With Murder”, and concluded that Shonda Rhimes is one of the best screenwriters of our time.
