“Guitar Hero… Heartbreak… Music School:” People in General Live at Lost Lake
On October 6th, People in General took the stage at Lost Lake Lounge in front of a crowd eager for their innovative music. The band’s witty crown interactions paired with their lively performance compelled both fans and newcomers to dance along with the band. People in General was pulled together from a variety of backgrounds. “It started with guitar hero…heartbreak…music school,” the band said to summarize their journey. Originally a folk punk band, the name People in General came about from the band googling the definition of folk to find the answer to be people in general. Now, the band aligns themselves closer to the genre of “mathy indie-punk.” However, they see their music more ambiguously, “It doesn’t really fit into a genre I don’t think. When you play in a band it’s like ‘This is a song I wrote.’ That’s just what it is.” Writing primarily without a genre, the band pulls influence from across the musical spectrum including Blink 182, Kesha, Foo Fighters, Steely Dan, Steve Miller, and No Doubt.
Based out of Fort Collins, People in General have a love for their “home base.” Even after touring across the U.S., Fort Collins remains at the top of their list of favorite music scenes, with Albuquerque as a close second. The band expanded on their love for the Colorado city. “Everyone knows each other…they have a dreamy music scene up there.” The members urge Denver bands to visit the scene in Fort Collins. “The venues pay out a bit better than they do out here [Denver] and are starving for anything that is not Fort Collins music.” The band highlighted the Atrium as one of their favorite hometown venues for Denver bands to check out.
