My One-Person Business Empire

Why I’ve Gone Back to Building My One-Person Business Empire Part-Time

I got red-pilled when it came to starting a one-person business.I used to believe you had to quit your 9–5 job and go all-in. Anything short of this standard wasn’t good enough for me. Otherwise, you were just another 9–5 wage slave LOL.I wrote articles a few months ago that I cringe at now. I’m not afraid to admit that I was a total wanker (maybe I still am).But hey, that’s life.If you don’t look back at the person you were 6–12 months ago and cringe, you haven’t grown enough. So, this brings me to my big news: my first one-person just got acquired. As part of the deal, I sold my client list and intellectual property, and I’ll now be working for another consultancy on a salary (I’ll also get a decent chunk of equity too). This means I’ll be back in the 9–5 and creating on the side. Here’s why having a 9–5 job is the best way to build a one-person business. The industry I wanted to serve was traditional and conservative — They also completely shut down from December — February every year. This means I can’t make any money for one quarter (or 25%) of the year. This significantly impacts planning and forecasting. The problem I wanted to solve; I knew I didn’t want to solve forever — This was the biggest realization. While I had the skills to solve this problem, I knew long-term that the service I provided wouldn’t match my ideal lifestyle (i.e., digital nomad or remote work). The clients I work with no longer align with my life mission — I want to surround myself with internet entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and creators who are at the cutting edge of their field. Most of my clients are in the 45+ bracket and still don’t know how to use email properly.
