Mass Media is Invading Your Boundaries. And It Is So Not Okay.
Over this week that is now transitioning to the next, while perusing job posts, every application felt like a moral tightrope walk. One position at an ad agency representing PETA, an organization with a track record of clashing with Inuit communities over whale hunting, had me locking up tight over the thought of potentially condoning attacks on indigenous communities. I had flashbacks to one of my very first adult jobs, working for Duane Reade as a pharmacy technician, dispensing antipsychotic medications for an 8-year-old patient, knowing the potential developmental consequences. Then there was the career dilemma of chronic internal conflict while supporting content and media that thrives on fear and addictive behavioral tendencies, perpetuating the cult of celebrity and scandal. It was a more glamorous job that paid better but wore me thin.
Can I get a freaking job or do something for a living that isn’t going to condone violence via capitalism?? Well, I suppose that is the reason why I am writing these articles and why I have spent nearly six years of my life trying to pump out media that affects people psychologically in more beneficial ways. Fear-mongering pays well. Grabbing people by the collar with shock and awe sells. And what sells continues to be pumped out according to the capitalist economy’s law of supply and demand. The tipping point, I believe, is when we collectively feel that enough is enough and start voting with our engagement, then start tanking profits, which I believe is already happening according to the massive tech and media industry layoffs and financial issues.
