A Life Without Technology

A Life Without Technology

Back in the 1980s, I was a kid. Back then, things were much more different than they are today, as one would expect. Life does change drastically in 40 years. Anyone expecting life to stay ideal would be a fool to believe that. Everything progresses with innovation and improvement in all facets of our lives. Yet, at the same time, these advances sometimes take away from things in real life, and one gets consumed by what they are consuming, for example, too much screen time. My grandparents had a place in Northern Michigan, and our backyard was full of state land, trails, and miles of woods. It was where I gained my appreciation for nature and a life away from television. We were lucky if we got one channel on the TV, and that was only at night time when the sky was clear.

I had learned to keep myself occupied without TV or my Atari 2600. I spent entire days at the beach and walked miles in the woods behind my grandparents’ place (with my mom’s supervision until I got older). The evenings were spent watching my grandfather build a fire that sometimes would reach a little too high for comfort. It was during these times in my youth that I learned to appreciate the simple things in life without getting consumed by devices.
