Why You Should Send Yourself A Birthday Card
For my sixtieth birthday on 14 September 2023 I received a lovely birthday card, from — myself. I think that our culture of counting our blessings and giving to others could do with tweaking. A counter culture to putting others first is to look after yourself as much as you care about others. This year I realized just how much emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical trauma that I have personally been through. It was mind blowing. And then came the mind blowing realization that I had the strength and capacity to survive it. Giving self-care to yourself is essential. You have to be capable mentally, spiritually and physically to be able to give to others! In the physical world I woke up to open a beautiful large birthday card from my partner’s mother. There were a few other equally treasured cards and some presents. Because I had posted myself a birthday card and wondered if anyone else did that and why, I asked Bing’s AI “why should you send yourself a birthday card” and it didn’t know! Score one for the human being. I know! Yes, Artificial Intelligence, we know that greeting cards are sent to express good-will and specific messages. But you and mainstream culture are not “big” on self-sending. You missed the word and the point “yourself.” So I am declaring that the overall reason why you can post yourself a card, which could be for anything, is to show YOU that you love yourself. You know what greeting cards that you like. Consciously writing in the card will connect you to your honored self. You can verify that it’s a deeply intended message by signing the card from “me”. Writing your name and address on the envelope will make you pause and realize that you are a real human being who deserves to be loved.
