the Lakeside

Autumn By the Lakeside

The images in this post are photos taken around Bass Lake of Holly Springs, near Raleigh, NC. All the images were taken by me during a photographic outing. The lake is fed by three creeks and has been a favorite spot for fishing, family picnics, weddings, baptisms, and more for over 150 years.

The pavilion offers an elegant banquet hall at fairly agreeable terms. Additionally, there’s the little snack and sandwich shop. There’s also a small store to sell or rent fishing gear — and of course, kitchy bric-a-brac. There are even small rowboats you can rent to push out into the water to fish.

Bass Lake is a personal favorite spot because it’s very accessible. There aren’t a lot of countryside places which are accessible for the disabled. But, the pavilion ramp is a gentle amble up to an absolutely fabulous lakeside wrap-around porch and easy-to-access docks for fishing or small boats. There’s also a well-maintained trail which I can easily navigate with my cane.
My favorite feature is the country rocker porch. Along one leg of the porch, a row of well-kept rocking chairs, perfectly placed to take in the most stunning views. On a cool autumn morning, nothing could be finer than to bask in the sun, looking across the sparkling lake at fall-color finery.

Just peruse the images in the four photo collages below. In my sixty years, I’ve taken my leisure in more than a dozen states. I have never been to any more perfectly appointed and peaceful setting.
