Vintage Book Review: A Canticle for Leibowitz
Iwas a Christian, once. It didn’t take. I’m a writer (ICYMI) in another part of my life, and I’ve been fairly…critical of what passes for modern Christianity (to say nothing of ecclesiastical history in general, regardless of religion, including what passes for my own, Zen Buddhism. Ask me about Myanmar, if you have a few hours and a high tolerance for profanity).
I don’t care for C.S. Lewis—he gives very, “excuse me sir, do you have a moment to—” vibes.
All this is important in context of Canticle for Liebowitz, because it is an overtly Christian novel. It just happens to not feel like one. And, I think that’s part of the beauty of what Walter Miller did, here. And for what he did, and how he did it, you’ll need a little context:
